Verse
E A
Little Joe, the wrangler, will wrangle nevermore
E B
His days with the remuda, they are o'er
E A
T'was a year ago last April, when he rode into our camp
E B E
C# little Texas stray and all alone.
E A
Was late in the ev'nin', when he rode up to the herd
E B
On a little old brown pony, he called Chaw
E A
With his brogan shoes and overalls, a tougher lookin' kid
E B E
You never in your life had ever saw.
A E
His saddle was a Texas 'kack' built many years ago
B
An O.K. spur on one foot, idly hung
E A
With his hot roll in a cotton sack, loosely tied behind
E B E
And a canteen from his saddle horn, was slung.
E A
He said he had to leave his home, his pa had married twice
E B
and his new ma whipped him every day or two
E A
So he saddled up old Chaw one night and "lit a shuck" this way
E B E
He said he'd try to paddle his own can- oe.
A E
He'd said if we would give him work, he'd do the best he could
B
Tho' he didn't know straight up, about a cow
E A
So the Boss, he cut him out a mount and he kindly put him on
E B E
He sorta liked the little kid, some- how.
E A
Well he learned to jingle horses and to know them one and all
E B
And to get em in by daybreak, if he could
E A
And to follow the chuck wagon and to always hitch the team
E B E
And to help the Cocinero rustle wood.
A E
We'd driven to Red River, the weather being fine
B
We were camped out on the south side, in a bend
E A
When a 'Norther' commenced blowin' we doubled up our guard
E B E
For it took all hands to hold the cattle in.
E A
Now little Joe, The Wrangler, was called out with the rest
E B
And though the kid had scarecly reached the herd
E A
When the cattle, they stampeded, like a hail storm long they fled
E B E
And we were all a ridin' for the lead.
A E
Midst the streaks of lightnin', there was one horse up ahead
B
Tryin' to stop the leaders in their speed
E A
Was little Joe, the wrangler, with a slicker o'er his head
E B E
He was ridin' old Blue Rocket in the lead.
E A
Now we finally got em millin' and kinda quieted down
E B
And the extra guard, back to the wagon, rode
E A
But there was one a-missin', and we knew it at a glance
E B E
Was our little Texas stray, poor wrangler Joe.
A E
Next mornin', just at daybreak, we found where Rocket fell
B
Down in a washout, twenty feet be- low
E A
And beneath his horse smashed to a pulp his spur had rung the knell
E B E
For our little Texas stray, poor wrangler Joe.
E A
Little Joe, The Wrangler, will wrangle nevermore
E B
His days with the remuda, they are o'er
E A
T'was a year ago last April, when he rode into our camp
E B E
Just a little Texas stray and nothin' more.
