Verse
F# B F#
Come hear the story of Bart McGee,
C#
Inyo County deputy 1873
B F# D#m
Chavez gang was running wild, raising hell
F# C# F#
Bart tracked 'em but things did not go well
D#m F#
Them bandits circled 'round and they caught him unaware
D#m C#
Took him to their hideout, tied him to a chair
D#m F#
They spent the night talking 'bout the things they could do
C# F#
To Bart McGee before they got through
D#m F#
Maybe they would skin him or drag him from a horse
D#m C#
Maybe they would hang him, they might shoot him of course
D#m F#
Bart just sat there as if he hadn't heard,
C# F#
Through it all he never said a word
[Verse 2]
F# B F#
Yeah this was desert country, all sagebrush and wind
C#
Beyond the Saline Valley, where hopes run mighty thin
B F# D#m
Them bandits drank their whiskey and just outside the door
F# C# F#
Was a bronco mule they'd stole the day before.
D#m F#
Them bandits roped that mule and they tied to the shack
D#m C#
Stripped ol' Bart naked and they stuck him on its back
D#m F#
And they turned him around 'til he was pointed East
C# F#
And they tied his legs together underneath
D#m F#
They untied that mule and they slapped it on the rear
D#m C#
It went crackin' through the sagebrush like a wild deer
D#m F#
They kept Bart's horse, his saddle and his guns
C# F#
And they figure Bart McGee's days were done.
[Verse 3]
F# B F#
Well that mule tried to buck him off, and through the choya danced
C#
Bart knew that stayin' with him, was his only chance
B F# D#m
Ol' Bart had fought the Paiute and he'd killed a grizzly bear
F# C# F#
And he could ride anything with hair
D#m F#
Well the sun burnt his naked butt and the wind chapped him dry
D#m C#
And he broiled like bacon, underneath that desert sky
D#m F#
He'd slap that mule upside the head to turn him left or right
C# F#
It was handlin' good when the moon come up that night
D#m F#
He made fifty miles, it ended none too soon
D#m C#
He topped the hill at Cerro Gordo that next afternoon
D#m F#
The drunks outside the Gem Saloon could not believe their eyes
C# F#
When a naked man on a mule trotted by.
[Verse 4]
F# B F#
We all asked what happened, Bart never said a word
C#
He yanked out the cactus thorns, put ointment on his burns.
B F# D#m
And he bought a horse and rifle and set out on his way
F# C# F#
But what he meant to do he wouldn't say
D#m F#
D# week went by without a word and we all feared the worst
D#m C#
Had them bandits got him, had he died of thirst?
D#m F#
Finally he come ridin' back leadin' his old horse
C# F#
And he also had his hat and guns of course
D#m F#
And the robbin' and killin' all came to an end.
D#m C#
Not one of that Chavez gang was ever seen again.
D#m F#
We asked Bart about it, and when we'd asked enough
C# F#
He said "I just went back and got my stuff"
[Refrain]
F# B F#
Come hear the story of Bart McGee
C#
Inyo County deputy 1873
B F# D#m
And you know he kept that mule for the rest of its life
F# C# F#
And he treated it better than some men treat their wives
D#m F# D#m C# D#m F# C# F#
Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh, a a huh, uh huh, ohh ho oh oh, oh ohho oh oh
