[Verse]
C#
Jonathan Crow lived a long time ago
G#
in his cabin, way down in the valley
He welled his own water and his favorite daughter
C#
was known as 'Jonathan's Sally.'
C#
Her teeth were as white as the moonlight at night,
G#
and her hair like ripe wheat on the hills.
Blue were her eyes as the midsummer skies,
C#
and her voice like the poor whippoorwill's.
C#
Jonathan Crow, he allowed he would go
G#
To the city, to purchase provisions,
So he hitched up his horse, to his wagon of course
C#
as soon as he made his decision
C#
So he clucked to his mare and depared from there
G#
On the road that led down through the valley.
And he promised his daughter, for he never forgot her,
C#
to bring something back to his Sally.
[Verse]
C#
Now a week had gone by when Sally's bright eye
G#
Discovered her pappy returning,
and with him on the seat, with his hair parted neat,
C#
sat a young man who set her heart yearning.
C#
He was tall, broad and strong, his hair curly and long
G#
in a style that was new to the valley.
And this handsome young stranger represented a danger
C#
to poor little innocent Sally!
C#
Every night for a week they met down by the creek,
G#
with frequent and fervent embraces,
'Til the young man appears, bringing Sally in tears
C#
Same and shagrin on their faces
C#
"Mr. Crow" he announced, "like a hawk I have pounced
G#
On this innocent dove here beside me;
Please believe me, however, it's just 'cause I never
C#
had no ddear mother to guide me.
C#
I've been quite a rover, I've traveled all over,
G#
But the sweetest gal I ever saw
C#
Is Sally, I love her, as I've just discovered,
C#
So please let us both call you Paw!"
C#
Well, they aired out the bedding, and announced a big wedding
G#
That folks came from miles to attend,
And the young man and Sally settled down in the valley,
C#
And lived happily on to the end.
